Homemade Sloppy Joes

SERVES: 6-8

 

INGREDIENTS

2 lbs lean hamburger

1 finely chopped onion

2 10 oz. cans of tomato sauce

6 oz can of tomato paste

3 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons white vinegar

2 teaspoon yellow mustard

1 teaspoon liquid smoke

1 teaspoons chili powder

1 teaspoon garlic powder

salt and pepper to taste

8 Sesame seed hamburger buns

Melted butter

Garlic powder

 

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large skillet with a lid, brown hamburger meat over medium heat.
  2. Drain fat from the skillet.
  3. Add onion and cook with the meat another 3-4 minutes until the onion is softened.
  4. Reduce the heat to low.
  5. Mix in all of the other ingredients, cover and simmer 15-20 minutes.
  6. While the sloppy joe mixture is simmering, open your hamburger buns and place them open side up on a baking sheet. Brush the buns with melted butter and dust with garlic powder. Place under broiler just until lightly toasted.  Watch them closely.  They will burn quickly.
  7. Scoop the sloppy joe mixture into each bun.

Note:  If you sloppy joe mixture is looking too dry while simmering, feel free to add a little water.  And don’t worry if you add too much water, just cook it for a few minutes with the lid off your skillet.
